Corebridge talks with InvestmentNews on Gen X, retirement & RILAs

Bryan Pinsky, President of Individual Retirement at Corebridge Financial, recently joined Gregg Greenberg with InvestmentNews at the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square to discuss Generation X, retirement and RILAs (registered index-linked annuities).

The full interview can be seen at InvestmentNews. The conversation was terrific, so we wanted to ask Bryan a few more questions.

Where is Gen X in terms of retirement planning and where should they be?

This year, in 2025, Gen X will be 45 to 60 years old. If we choose 65 as a typical retirement age, then Gen Xers are only 5 to 15 years away from that milestone.

Many are in their prime earning years, but the window for retirement planning is closing quickly. Now is the time to take action. Since so many are already pre-retirees or soon to become one, we would encourage Gen X to work with their financial professional to give their plans for retirement some serious consideration.

Spend time visualizing what you want your retirement to be. Who will you be spending time with? What activities will you want to pursue? Where will you find meaning and purpose? As you develop your vision for retirement, use that as motivation to take the action steps you need to help get you there.

What should financial professionals know about Gen X?

Corebridge has great research on Gen X titled Don’t You Forget About Me. One particularly compelling finding from this study is that Gen X is the least confident and most concerned – more than any other age group – about their financial prospects for retirement.

Remember that Gen X is a sandwich generation, potentially caring for elderly parents while at the same time bringing up their own children. This dynamic can create significant financial stresses, so financial professionals should recognize these concerns as they work with Gen X clients.

What does this mean in terms of a retirement portfolio? Gen X clients may want some protection – making sure that their portfolio remains sturdy during a critical time – but they may also need growth potential – positioning their portfolio to provide for a retirement that could possibly last several decades.

Do RILAs make sense for Gen X?

RILAs, or registered index-linked annuities, are a type of annuity that brings together growth potential with a level of protection against downside risk, so we see a strong match between RILAs and Gen X.

Corebridge is very excited to have just launched our new RILA, the Corebridge MarketLock® Annuity, and we are already having great conversations with financial professionals about how this product can play an important role in a diversified portfolio.
